little mermaid book

The Little Mermaid is a book redesign of the famous fairytale, The Little Mermaid, by Christian Anderson. Growing up, it was one of my favorite stories, and I especially loved the Disney movie version. For this project, I chose a darker aesthetic, sticking to the vibe of the original story. Twelve illustrations were made to support the storytelling by picking the most pivotal and important parts of the fairytale. To finish the project and bring it to life, I printed and assembled a physical version of the book.

After many first renditions of how the rendering of the illustrations would go, I decided to cover The Little Mermaid’s face to allow viewers to picture her as they wanted to. Even within the story, the physical descriptions are very vague, and we wanted to translate this into the drawings as well. What the most beautiful woman looks like differs from person to person, so it only seemed appropriate. I stuck with a cooler color palette, and I tried to give the illustrations a bit of watercolor texture to emphasize that half of the story takes place underwater.
